Survey Information

Survey Name:

Extra-stat, collection of non-EU Merchandise trade data

Business Area:

External Trade, External Trade and Environment.

Survey Purpose:

Collection of non-EU Merchandise trade statistics as derived from administrative data of Revenue Commissioners (via the Single Administrative Document)

Legislative Basis:

Council Regulation (EC) No 1172/95 of 22 May 1995 on the statistics relating to the trading of goods by the Community and its Member States with non-member countries. Commission Regulation (EC) No 1917 /2000 of 7 September 2000 laying down certain provisions for the implementation of Council Regulation (EC) No 1172/95 as regards statistics on external trade.

Periodicity:

A trader (or their agent) is liable to complete for customs purposes a Single Administrative Document (SAD) for each consignment of goods imported from/exported to non_EU countries. The information on the SAD is captured by the customs AEP (Automated Entry Processing) system and transferred on a monthly basis to VIMA (the branch of the Revenue Commissioners responsible for collecting and editing trade data). The VIMA office passes the edited data to the CSO.

Every transaction/consignment over EUR 254

Sampling Frame:

not applicable

Survey Size:

Number of consignments each month is approx 80,000. This includes imports and exports.

Principal Variables Collected:

Date, Company Vat Number, Trade flow (import/export), Commodity code (CN), Invoice value, Net mass and/or supplementary units, country of destination/consignment for exports/imports respectively, country of origin for imports, Statistical value, Delivery terms, Mode of transport, nature of transaction.

Principal External Users:

Eurostat, Media, Companies, Public, PQs, Other Government Departments and internally within CSO
