Survey Name:

Wholesale Price Index (WPI)

Business Area:

Survey Purpose:

Collection of Producer and Wholesale Prices for calculation of indices published in a monthly release. The indices are used as a short-term indicator of the business cycle. Some of these indices are required as deflator of industrial production by National Accounts. Some indices are used for contractual purposes in the construction industry.

Legislative Basis:

Results produced by the survey are required under EU regulations (COUNCIL REGULATION (EC) No 1165/98 of 19 May 1998 concerning short-term statistics (Official Journal L 1 62 , 05/06/1998) amended in 2005 by Regulation (EC)no 1158/2005 (Official Journal L 191/1 , 22/07/2005)). The survey is mandatory for companies sampled on the basis of Statutory Instrument 534/2009 (Statistics (Prices) Order).

Target Population:

Local Units in Nace Rev. 2 Divisions 05-33.

Sampling Frame:

Sample is drawn from all local units, stratified on the basis of Nace Rev. 2 Division, in the Census of Industrial Population.

Survey Size:

Approximately 1,300 Companies with 7,000 products

Principal Variables Collected:

Price only collected monthly unless items are changed in which case new product description and terms of sale are collected

Principal External Users:

National Accounts, Eurostat, Government, Economists, contractors in building and construction industry
